Training Center
Welcome to AFPD's state-of-the-art Training Center, a two and one-half acre site and 16,000 square foot building. The facility is provided with a 6 story training tower and repelling platform, drafting pit, 4 fire hydrants, 95 seat amphitheater, 30 seat classroom, 15 seat classroom, a command training center, a detached two story, seven room burn house with sprinkler and standpipe connections, and a 5 story, eleven room burn building with sprinkler and standpipe connections.
The responsibility of the Training Division is to design and implement programs through which Department members obtain and maintain the skills necessary to provide the safest and most effective emergency services to the community. We support the fire service and the community in fire safety training and education. This responsibility begins the day the new recruits start and continues throughout their careers.
The training program is divided into two basic parts, multi-company training and ongoing station training. Multi-company trainings are a four-hour class taught four times each year on a different topic:
- Fire Fighter Safety
- Driver's Training
- Structural Firefighting
- Hose Evolutions
- SCBA
- Haz-Mat
- EMS
The other format is station training. These trainings are completed on a daily basis at each station. Topics include: Station/Area and Equipment Familiarization Pump Operations Truck Qualifications Driver Training Additional "In" Station Trainings. In addition to the regular training classes, a number of extra and special team training classes are offered at the training center or at other facilities.
The following special team trainings are also offered:
- Ice Rescue
- Swift Water
- Hazardous Material
- Technical Rescue
- Child Passenger Safety
All firefighters are certified as:
Fire Fighter II
Hazardous Materials Operations or Technician Level
Driver Operator
Emergency Medical Technician - Basic or Paramedic
All officers, in addition to the above, are certified as:
Fire Officer I
Fire Instructor I
Fire Inspector I
The Training Division also strives to serve as a resource to the fire community and the citizens of the Fire District. Training programs for citizens are conducted at the Training Center. Citizen training includes: Citizens Fire Academy Youth Fire Academy Young Marines Fire Academy.
A number of outside agencies also utilize the training center:
- Arvada Police
- Jefferson County Sheriff
- Adams-Jefferson County Hazardous Materials Response Team - North Area Technical Rescue Team
- Denver Regional Council of Governments
- Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control - several local area Fire Departments.
Arvada Fire Hosts an annual auto extrication training, Auto-X. This training is attended by 100 firefighters each year from throughout the western region, who learn different techniques regarding motor vehicle accidents and how to successfully remove patients.
